An
illustrious field took to the Newcastle links for the 1907 British Amateur including; the
three Hezlet sisters (May,Florence and Violet), the Curtis sisters who had travelled from
America, Miss Walker Leigh who had won the Irish Close at Royal Dublin that year. Miss
Dorothy Campbell the Musselburgh player was consider favourite given the awful weather
conditions and the Scots reputed to be born at 45° angles to allow for prevailing wind
conditions in Scotland together with the fact she was a semi-finalist in this event over
the last four years. However she was returning from an illness and was knocked out in the
first round together with Miss A. Glover of Elie who was beaten by Miss M.E. Stuart of
Portrush. The two Curtis sisters were also both knocked out in the 3rd round Miss M Curtis
was beaten by May Hezlet 3 and 2 and the other sister beaten 9 and 7 by Miss Titterton of
Musselburgh. There approach play was considered to be their downfall as they had few
equals from the tee or on the green. |
