Women Golfers' Museum

"At the Annual dinner of the Veteran Ladies' Golfing Association held in April 1938, a speaker urged the establishment of a Museum for the purpose of collecting and exhibiting objects relating to the origin and growth of women's golf. The scheme is now in the process of being organised."

This notice was circulated by the LGU to all clubs in 1938, and "the scheme" certainly took off… for when the Museum officially opened in the Lady Golfers Club, 3 Whitehall Court, in April 1939, it was judged a great success.

The first committee had as its President, Issette Pearson, and the first Chairman was Mabel Stringer, who was affectionately known as "Auntie Mabel" to her golfing friends. Ladies' Golf owes a lot to Aunty Mabel, she was the first female golf journalist, assistant secretary of the LGU; she founded the Girls’ Golfing Society and the Veteran Ladies' Golf Association. She was a born organiser, and knew everyone involved in Ladies Golf. Her enthusiasm would certainly have driven "the scheme" forward, and there would have been no doubt about its success with Aunty Mabel at the helm..

NMS is Scotland's national museum service. We care for many of Scotland's museum collections of national and international importance, and present these to the public at our museums. We also provide advice and expertise to the museums community across Scotland. "Since then the Women Golfers' Museum has remained in Scotland but the collection has been split with the clubs, balls, trophies, medals and costumes housed at the British Golf Museum (BGM) at St Andrews whilst the books, handbooks and magazines , albums and scrapbooks, photographs and other memorabilia are in the Royal Museum, National Museums of Scotland (NMS) in Chambers Street, Edinburgh."

"Welcome to a unique website dedicated to the history of the Walker Cup and the amateur game. We include an extensive database of material regarding the history of golf’s finest contest, maintain an archive of historical information about international amateur golf and report regularly, and in depth, on developments in the amateur game around the world. The site, which is based on the book, The Walker Cup, Golf’s Finest Contest, 1922-2003 by Gordon G. Simmonds (ggs@walkercuphistory.com) provides the only complete statistical database of information on the Web about the Walker Cup matches, the players, the venues, the captains and individual records."
  The Keepers' Mission

We will preserve golf's fine traditions and etiquette (self-reliance, honesty, manners, honor, thoughtfulness). The essence of golf must not be lost in a world where change outpaces perspective and winning is more important than honor. Keepers will improve and expand golf's traditions and seek ways they can be spread throughout wider life.
