In
1993 Christies auctioned 'The Bobby Locke Collection' which included
the 1938 Irish Open medal which sold for Stg£2,070. His British Open
Championship medal from 1949 sold for Stg£24,150.
Another
lot contained the silver golf trophy from the same year inscribed
"Course Record 69 Portmarnock Golf Club A.D.Locke Irish Open
Champion 21.7.1938" which fetched Stg£299.

The
1993 Christies auction also had a silver salver belonging to Bobby
Locke which he won as the best amateur at the 1936 Irish Open Championship
which sold for Stg£1,035. |

Sotheby's
in 1988 auctioned a "The Golfing Union of Ireland hallmarked
15ct. golf and enamelled Brooch Medallion, the enamelled shield
depicting golfer in action, the reverse engraved Inter Club Competitions
1900, Won by H.Dodd, D.U.G.C."

Sotheby's
also auctioned a set of Irish Golf Union medals one hallmarked 15ct
gold, Chester 1909 and the other hallmarked Birmingham 1910 these
were evenually sold for Stg£1,012.

The
most unusual piece of Irish autographed golfiana came up for auction
in 2000, it was a menu from the Grand Central Hotel in Belfast,
Northern Ireland signed by Walter Hagen, Joe Kirkwood and Walter
Smith (Hagen's caddie) these signatures were obtained in person
on 14th September 1937 by a Mrs Denning, an employee of the Hotel.
Mrs Denning collected autographs of all the noteable personalities
of the 1930s, both in Sport and Entertainment, who stayed at the
Grand Central in Belfast. It sold for $138 at auction.

9.375ct golf medal for a competition played at Armagh Golf Club
in 1897 which was won by G.M.Greer was sold at auction for $152.50.

William
Gibson's book 'Early Irish Golf' noted that "if the club [Dublin
Scottish] had survived it would have been the second oldest in Dublin
and one of the earliest in Ireland" This medal is the earliest
Irish medal to appear at auction the next being an 1897 Armagh Golf
Golf medal. He goes on to refer to an article in the Irish Times of
the 6th October 1890.."The members of the above club played their
first annual handicap medal on Saturday at Baldoyle, the winner being
Mr. John M. Fisher. This medal was sold for $565 and quite possibly
another momento of Irish golf leaves our shore. It was sold in
its original presentation
box. |
