and Dine on Your Golfing Trip
by Georgina Campbell (Autumn 2005) Reserve
a copy
The book combines
a guide to the very top golf courses of Ireland with one to
the most comfortable and enjoyable places to eat and to stay
en route. Both golf courses and establishments are selected
entirely on merit and do not pay for entry in the guide. Simple
and user friendly, the book includes a careful selection of
around fifty of the country's most challenging golf courses
arranged in groups around the countryside, with up to the
minute practical information, photographs, and maps. To
match each golfing section there is a guide to the most comfortable
and enjoyable accommodation, and also restaurants, pubs or
cafes with really interesting food and great atmosphere that
will enhance the golfer's experience of playing Ireland's
top courses. Each section also includes the useful information
that golfers need to get the best from their Irish golfing
holiday The guide builds on the reputation of two experienced
writers in the hospitality and golf fields: the Georgina Campbell
Guides to The Best Places To Eat Drink and Stay in Ireland
are widely recognized as the essential companions to any tour
around the country, and Dermot Gilleece is Ireland's top golfing
journalist Designed to cater for both the home and overseas
market, this highly selective guide will be both an ideal
gift and a long lived and useful substitute for the plethora
of cross references in books, mgazines ,and brochures needed
by intrepid and discerning golfers For the more casual
golfer, it will provide the perfect reference for planning
holidays and short breaks in the most enjoyable surroundings.

Golf
on the Links of Ireland: A Father and His Sons Explore The Coastal
Courses of the Emerald Isle by Robert Kroeger
ISBN: 1-4257-0550-2 (Trade Paperback)
ISBN: 1-4257-0551-0 (Hardback)
Pages: 203 TRAVEL / General
Description
Golf on the Links of Ireland features over 30 golf courses found
along the spectacular coastline of Ireland. The author is a
lucky man: hes been blessed with a wonderful wife, five
children, and a great son-in-law
and has been fortunate
enough to play on over 300 courses in the British Isles and
Ireland. With a passion for golf on links courses and with maternal
roots lodged in Ireland, hes always dreamed of letting
his sons see the unique and disarming beauty of this enchanting
island. So, in the summers of 2004 and 2005, two of his sons
accompanied him on such a pilgrimage. They wanted to discover
the soul of Ireland, to smell the crispness of an Irish morning
on a seaside links, to hit that ever-intriguing blind shot over
a sand dune. Dave, Mike and their dad played matches on 30 courses
some against each other and some against Irish golf club
members. The author can honestly say that, although hes
played on all but one of the British Open courses in Scotland
and England, his most treasured memories are those matches against
local club members. John Low, in a book he wrote in 1903, Concerning
Golf, described the merits of match play: To taste the
salt in the breeze, blowing in off the Irish Sea, always invigorates
me. We played The European Club, Doonbeg, Old Head, Waterville,
Portstewart, Ballyliffin, and Enniscrone, all respectable tests
of golf. We delighted in the artfully crafted greens of the
Alister MacKenzie gem at Lahinch and we took a trip back in
time in visiting the remote links of Rosapenna only to
find a modern links masterpiece sculpted by Pat Ruddy. Some
of our most treasured moments came at the wee nine-holers at
Cruit Island, Connemara Isles, Bushfoot, and Spanish Bay. For
golfers dreaming of a trip to this fascinating land, this book
is a must. |
