George
F. Crosbie : The Bruen Loop [The Jimmy Bruen Story] Mercier Press
1998 {ISBN 1 85635 068 1} The Story of Jimmy Bruen destined to be
one of the great amateur golfers of all time until a wrist injury
effectively ended his competitive golf at an early age.His appeal
was summed up by Pat Ward-Thomas "Of all the golfers I have
watched down the years there was one whose game had a quality of
excitement that was incomparable. Hogan and Cotton could stir the
imagination..Thomson and Snead could create an awareness of beauty..but
the golf of none of these men had a greater dramatic appeal for
me than that of James Bruen, Citizen of Cork". Jimmy's father
and wife Nell collected cuttings, photographs, letters, wires, scorecards,
badges etc which all assisted in the writing of this book. The author
was no slouch at the game either and was runner-up in the Irish
Close Championship for three consecutive years 1955-57

Seamus
Smith : 'Himself' [Christy O'Connor Snr] Published By Colorman [ISBN
0 952277] Christy
was born in Galway on December 21, 1924 and was professional at Bundoran,
Killarney and the Royal Dublin GC he has made 10 Ryder Cup appearances
between 1955-1973 and won the Irish Professional Championship ten
times. World Seniors Champion in 1976 and 1977. Third place in 1961
British Open and joint second in 1965 both at Royal Birkdale, twice
winner of the Harry Vardon Trophy. As the Irish Open ended in 1954
and didn't resume until 1975 he was never in a position to take this
honour which he undoubtedly would have. He claimed victory in many
events but the sweetess may have been the Dunlop Masters 1959 when
he overtook Joe Carr who had built up what looked like an unasailable
lead and JB recalls this as his greatest regret that he didn't get
the better of Christy. |

"The Life of OReilly
is a chronicle of Johns career, and to read it is to feel
like you are in the clubhouse, having a pint, and hearing the stories
of a lifetime. Like the one about him being in San Francisco and
having to get to New Zealand for the World Cup by going first to
Atlanta, then London, then Atlanta, then Los Angeles, and then,
finally, on to Aucklandfor a total of 44 hours of flying.
Or the one about the Tour pro who put his foot through his bag after
a bad shot and could not get it out again. Or the time he was penniless
but still managed to travel from Liverpool to Southampton to Berlinspending
part of the journey inside a zipped golf bag. There
was never a dull moment! says Padraig Harrington of the years
John carried the bag for him. And in The Life of OReilly,
a rollicking ride around the world of professional golf, there is
never a dull page." Extract from Clocktower Press [ISBN
